Alec --- the Electronic Medical Records Community brought to you by Anne Arundel Health System

What is Alec?
Alec is AAMC's new patient-centric electronic medical record (EMR). The hospital, the emergency room, and even outpatient practices all share the same record, so your health information goes where you go. The doctors taking care of you have access to items such as your medical history, medication list, allergies, and lab and x-ray results. Alec is available to all physicians who practice in the AAMC community of care.

What is an Alec practice?
AAMC has made Alec available to outpatient practices. This medical practice has joined the Alec community of care and uses its EMR to take care of all of its patients.

What are the benefits of being an Alec patient?
You can expect the doctors and nurses who take care of you to know more about you as a patient. Instead of repeating tests, guessing at your medications and drug allergies, and asking you to repeat yourself over and over, they will be able to review your medical information and make your care experience more efficient and safe. Reminders about drug interactions and related warnings are automatically sent to the clinician caring for you, so errors and complications are less likely to occur.

And, as an Alec patient, you have an exciting opportunity to participate more effectively in your care. Ask about MyChart, a patient portal that allows you to review your medical information, contact your doctor, request appointments and refills, etc.

I understand my health information is to be shared. How is it to be protected?
Alec's EMR is much more protected than a traditional paper chart record. Access to Alec is secure. And within the population of healthcare workers using Alec, only those with direct patient care responsibility (doctors, nurses) have access to health information. There is a "need to know" priority of access, so that each Alec user can see only the information required to fulfill his duties. So, for example, a registration clerk in the hospital would NOT have access to your private medical information.

Alec places even further restrictions on access to sensitive care encounters, such as drug and alcohol treatment, psychiatric care, etc.

Tell me more about MyChart.
MyChart is Alec's easy-to use patient portal that allows secure access to your health record. You can use MyChart to review your health information, request appointments and refills, ask you doctor non-urgent questions, and check on your health maintenance schedule. Signing up for MyChart is free. Just ask your doctor's office to provide you with information. Parents can sign up to have access to the medical records of their young children, as well!
