Frequently Asked Questions About Pain Management
- What should I expect from my care providers at AAMC?
The acute pain team is here to help you be as pain-free as possible. The team consists of
nurses and pharmacists with special training in pain management. It is our job to listen to you, to believe your report of pain and to develop an
individualized plan to eliminate or control your pain. You should also receive information and education regarding pain and available options for pain
relief.
- How much post-operative pain is normal?
Post-operative pain can be minor to severe. It’s more important to understand that you don’t have to “live
with it.” Trying to ignore your pain can lead to complications and hurt your recovery.
- Who do I tell if I’m having pain?
Communication is the key to effective pain control, so make sure you tell someone. Your nurse should be your
first link to your pain management team.
- How is pain treated?
Depending on the type, severity and complexity of the plain there are a variety of treatment options that can be used alone
or combined for more effective relief. These options include:
Pharmacologic measures—There are numerous non-narcotic and narcotic medications
available for pain management. Depending on your needs medications can be administered by mouth, intramuscularly, intravenously, into a joint or
trigger point or via an epidural catheter.
Non-pharmacologic measures—Relaxation, hot or cold compresses, and ensuring proper body positioning and
re-positioning.
Physical therapy—To rehabilitate, correct underlying problem and prevent further injury.
Psychology/Psychiatry—To develop effective coping skills for pain and deal with the emotional effects of pain.
Integrative therapies–These include acupuncture, massage, Reiki, and
guided imagery. (Utilization of such therapies is best when combined with traditional treatments as part of a total plan for pain control and when
provided by licensed or certified practitioners).
- Will I become addicted to my pain medication?
This is a common misconception. Narcotic addiction during pain treatment is actually rare.
