State of the Art Technology — The latest radiological image guidance technology is available at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Procedures are carried out using dedicated staff and appropriate sedation to ensure our patients have the best experience possible.

Acute Pain Services

Acute pain following surgery or trauma is one of the most common types of pain. The acute pain team is here to help. The team consists of nurses and pharmacists with specialized training in pain management.

Every nursing unit has a pain champion close at hand. The pain champion is a nurse who is dedicated to making sure that patients with pain get the best treatment possible. The nurse champion works closely with pharmacists who have many years of experience in pain medications. The team is completed by a nurse practitioner who specializes in the latest techniques available for treating pain.

Chronic Pain Services

Chronic pain may be continuous or it may come and go over a period of months or years but it is no longer something you have to learn to live with. Pain patients now have a wide variety of effective options available to them. These include medications, physical therapy, surgery and integrative therapies such as acupuncture and massage.

The AAMC Pain Management Program combines the medical expertise of our staff with the latest technological advances to develop an individual treatment plan that's right for you.

Cancer Pain Services

Cancer pain can be a combination of acute and chronic pain due to the disease process and associated treatments. Cancer patients have a right to expect that their pain will be managed with the same compassion and care as their disease. The AAMC Pain Management Team is sensitive to the special needs of cancer patients.

Pain Treatment

Depending on the type, severity and complexity of the plain there are a variety of treatment options that can be used alone or combined for more effective relief. These options include:

Pharmacologic measures
There are numerous non-narcotic and narcotic medications available to ease pain.

Non-pharmacologic measures
Relaxation, hot or cold compresses, and ensuring proper body positioning and re-positioning.

Physical therapy
To rehabilitate, correct underlying problems and prevent further injury.

Psychology/Psychiatry
To develop effective coping skills for pain and deal with the emotional effects of pain.

Integrative therapies
These include acupuncture, massage, Reiki, and guided imagery (as part of a total plan for pain control and when provided by licensed or certified practitioners).

Spiritual guidance
Our fully staffed, interdenominational Spiritual Care Department is ready to assist patients’ spiritual needs.

AAMC’s Pain Management Program is committed to finding the appropriate therapies to bring you safe and effective relief from pain.
