Birth Classes Our birth classes are designed for the expectant mother and her birth partner. We want to prepare you for a positive birthing experience. Classes include information about recognizing labor, the birth process, comfort measures including breathing and relaxation as well as pain control with medications and or epidural anesthesia. We will discuss birth technologies such as induction, augmentation and delivery by cesarean section. The next steps of recovery and postpartum will be addressed and initial newborn care. When available a pediatrician or nurse practioner will discuss choosing a health care provider for the new baby and provide information about care of the newborn. All classes will include a tour of the Clatanoff Pavilion. We offer classes in a one day format, 4 week series, classes for multiple births, hypnobirthing and additional classes in breathing and relaxation. Breast Feeding
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life and the gradual introduction of solid foods while maintaining breastfeeding from 6-12 months. To learn more about giving your baby the breast start register for one of our breastfeeding basics classes. This class is taught by a lactation consultant and you will learn how to prepare for breastfeeding and the steps for success. Birth partners are encouraged to attend. Registration is required and we recommend you register at the beginning of your second trimester. Family Education
Anne Arundel Medical Center wants to include your entire family in your birth experience. We have a sibling prep class to prepare your other children ages 3-7 for the new arrival and what they can do to help. We offer a super sitter class for those adolescents who want to begin their babysitting career as well as help take care of a new brother or sister. We haven’t forgotten about the new grandparents either. A class just for them that discusses all the changes in infant care since they were parents and more. As part of our community education we plan additional programs of interests to families such as the truth about bullying, dealing with food allergies, and up to date information about vaccinations to name a few. Newborn Care
Expectant parents just love this class! Babies don’t come with instructions! At this hands on class, expectant parents learn to bathe, diaper, swaddle, and comfort their new born. We want you to feel confident in your ability to take care of your new baby. Bring your birth partner so as a couple you can share the responsibilities of the new baby.
